Power of People - 1

(Photo: Courtesy Vikesh Blog)

Governments,
political parties, rules and regulations, technologies, fads and fashions,
drought and flood will come and go, but the only thing that will remain here
forever is our people. People are the roots of this national tree and in their
power is the power of the country.

Of all resources we have, human resource is the most important to us
(though this assumption is biased and less sustainable).  Therefore, human resource management should
be of paramount importance to us. There are many around us who take a birth of
ignominy and hardly get access to the basic rights of food, shelter, education,
health and justice. This weakens our roots. Roots must be empowered to the
proportion of the plant’s growth and they must get their deserved nourishment
and support. Otherwise, we are likely to be a tree near the bank of a river whose
roots are washed by water and which succumbs to water faster due to lopsided
growth of heavy branches.

It is difficult to distinguish who is the root and who is the branch in
the same set population. But the fact remains that due to the natural tendency
of strong getting stronger and weak getting weaker, there is a portion of our
population which needs immediate attention. And if more of them belong to the
so called root of our society then the situation is alarming.

Negligence does pay for itself. If a portion of the population is
deprived of something, the other part is deprived of something else as well.
The neglected human resource does neglect the rest by not being able to
contribute to their fullest capacity and this is a loss and failure for any
society or country.

How can we ensure that every person born is given the same scope and
opportunity to serve the society? How can we stop the increasing economic
divide? If we cannot, it is of no good for any of us. In an integrated society,
the failure of one is the failure of others as well.  All people are interlinked in a cycle of
interest. A damaged ball bearing in this wheel makes others ineffective. And
this is a failure for all.  One cannot
win at the cost of other’s failure.

At this moment, when the well to do families are facing difficulty to
purchase their daily essentials like food, vegetables and petrol what is the
significance of poverty line? Estimates indicate that more than 25% of about
115 crore  people in India live below
poverty line. Without going into the details of how poverty line is defined, it
can well be said that more than one fourth of the country do not get the
required food, medicine and education or light of knowledge. This means about
30 crore people are not able to meet their basic needs though they work harder
than others. They fail to contribute their best as they just struggle to
survive. Unfortunately, these failed and hardworking people are falling apart
from the rest of the society breaking the social integrity and cohesion.

This huge power of people which otherwise could help building the nation
is getting weakened and it should be the goal of the country to reduce the
number of such people who cannot contribute to the growth of the country due to
poverty, illiteracy, heath or any other reason. Their power is our power and
their failure is ours.
